The non-obvious side of E+R=O
E+R=O has an obvious relationship to the past and a non-obvious one.
The obvious one: your response is the bridge between past and future. Your body. Your mind. Your relationships. Your roles. Your priorities. None of them are fixed. They're all moving from what they were to what they will be. It never stops. Everything is becoming something.
The non-obvious relationship is how you think through the equation. In English, E+R=O reads left to right. Event first. Then response. Then outcome. Because it reads that way on paper, many people think through it that way in life. They encounter an event, try to respond well, and hope for a good outcome.
The problem is that way of thinking is too attached to the past. The event already happened. You're reacting to an event from the past, not building toward an outcome in the future. That's the difference between an "Event Responder" and an "Outcome Creator".
Being stuck in the past isn't limited to what happened years ago. People ruin entire days reacting to something that went wrong that morning. The event is in the past whether it was 20 years ago or 5 minutes ago.
Discipline with E+R=O means understanding the event, not fixating on it. It means focusing on the outcome you're trying to create, not the event you just experienced.
The future comes whether you participate or not. You don't honor the past by hiding from the future. You honor it by understanding it. Then build something better.
Make the leap. Do the work.
